What a VIN Decode Reveals
When you decode a VIN, you unlock the vehicle's factory DNA. Here's exactly what our decoder returns for every VIN.
Make & Manufacturer
The parent company and brand — Toyota, Honda, Ford, BMW, etc.
Model & Body Style
Sedan, SUV, truck, coupe — plus exact model name (Camry, Civic, F-150).
Model Year
The production year encoded in position 10. See year code chart →
Engine & Drivetrain
Engine displacement, fuel type, cylinder count, and transmission type.
Trim Level & Options
Base, Sport, Limited — the factory configuration when the car was built.
Country & Plant
Where the vehicle was assembled — critical for import buyers. Import guides →
What Each VIN Position Means
A VIN is not random — every character encodes specific information about the vehicle. Here's what each of the 17 positions reveals. Learn more about VIN numbers →
World Manufacturer Identifier (WMI)
Identifies the country of manufacture and the manufacturer. Position 1 is the country code (1/4/5 = USA, 2 = Canada, J = Japan, W = Germany). Positions 2–3 narrow down the specific manufacturer and division.
Vehicle Descriptor Section (VDS)
Encodes the vehicle's attributes: body style, engine type, restraint system, and trim level. Position 8 specifically identifies the engine — critical information for parts ordering and insurance purposes.
Check Digit
A mathematical verification digit calculated from all other VIN characters. Used to detect forged or mistyped VINs. Our decoder automatically validates this digit when you enter your VIN. Calculate the check digit manually →
Model Year Code
A single character encoding the vehicle's model year. Note: letters I, O, Q, U, Z and digit 0 are never used. See the full model year code table →
Plant Code
Identifies the specific manufacturing facility where the vehicle was built. Each manufacturer defines their own plant codes — a Toyota built in Georgetown, KY has a different plant code than one from Japan.
Sequential Serial Number
The unique sequential production number assigned to this specific vehicle on the assembly line. Combined with the rest of the VIN, this makes every VIN globally unique — no two vehicles ever share the same complete VIN.
VIN Decoder by Car Make
Select your vehicle's make for a specialized decoder with WMI codes, factory locations, and model-specific VIN breakdowns. All 30 makes supported.
Free VIN Decoder vs. Full Vehicle History Report
A VIN decoder reads the static code built into your VIN. A vehicle history report reveals everything that happened to the car after it left the factory. See CARFAX alternatives from $5.
