Flood Title Check — Was This Car Water Damaged?

Unlike collision damage, flood damage affects every system in a vehicle simultaneously — electrical, mechanical, and structural. Problems include:

• Electrical failures — corroded wiring, malfunctioning sensors and computers
• Mold and mildew — health hazards hidden in seats, carpet, and ventilation
• Mechanical corrosion — rusted brake lines, engine internals, and suspension components

After every major hurricane — Harvey, Irma, Ian, Helene — hundreds of thousands of vehicles are totaled by floodwater. These cars are purchased at salvage auctions for pennies on the dollar, cleaned up, and re-titled in states with weaker disclosure requirements.

CARFAX estimates that over 450,000 flood-damaged vehicles were active on US roads after recent hurricane seasons. Many had their flood title brands removed through cross-state title washing.

High-risk buying windows

The 6-18 months following a major hurricane see the highest volume of flood cars entering the used market. Gulf Coast and Southeast states are the primary sources, but these vehicles get transported nationwide.

Detection beyond the report

Even with a VIN report, inspect for physical signs: musty odor, water lines in the trunk or under seats, corroded electrical connectors, foggy headlights, and dirt or sand in unusual crevices. A $5 report catches the documented history — a mechanic catches the rest.
