Pre-1981 VINs
What to know about shorter VIN formats.
Before the 1981 standardization, manufacturers used their own VIN formats ranging from 11 to 17 characters. These shorter VINs are harder to decode and may not be compatible with modern vehicle history databases.
If you are checking a classic or vintage vehicle with a shorter VIN, free online decoders may not work. Contact the manufacturer or a specialist classic car registry for decoding assistance. For vehicles from 1981 onward, use our free VIN decoder for instant results.
